Lauren M. Beagen is a maritime and transportation attorney who works with companies, trade associations, ports, and many other supply-chain stakeholders on the regulatory and operational issues that affect how goods move. Her experience spans ocean and surface transportation, port and terminal operations, and the Shipping Act, with a practical focus on identifying risk, understanding regulatory obligations, and navigating challenges such as transportation disruptions and cargo theft.
As Founder and Principal of Squall Strategies®, Lauren leads a maritime law firm that supports clients with regulatory navigation and compliance across global ocean shipping and supply chains, including helping organizations issue-spot transportation and cargo-movement risks and connect with appropriate subject matter experts when cargo theft concerns arise. She also serves as Founder and CEO of The Maritime Professor®, an educational platform that makes complex maritime regulations understandable through online courses, corporate training programs, webinars, and speaking engagements.
Lauren hosts By Land and By Sea™, a widely respected podcast offering plain-language legal and policy insights into global ocean shipping. Highly regarded for its timely FMC updates and regulatory analysis, the show is followed by professionals across the maritime and logistics sectors and is frequently cited as a go-to resource for understanding evolving supply chain policy and enforcement trends.
While in Washington DC, Lauren served as International Affairs Attorney in the Federal Maritime Commission’s Office of the General Counsel. In this role, she provided counsel on statutory authorities, liaised with Washington DC based maritime attachés of foreign embassies, and served as a maritime technical advisor (representing the Federal Maritime Commission) as part of the United States government delegation for international maritime negotiations.
Her industry experience also includes work at the Massachusetts Port Authority (Port of Boston), work on the U.S. Extended Continental Shelf Project with the U.S. Department of State and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and an internship at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg, Germany.
Lauren is a frequent media commentator, appearing regularly on SiriusXM’s Road Dog Trucking Radio, has been featured in a CNBC mini documentary on Amazon’s supply chain, and is often quoted in trade press such as Bloomberg, Lloyd’s List, and the Journal of Commerce.
Active in maritime policy, safety, and industry organizations, Lauren participates and holds leadership roles in the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), WISTA USA New England Chapter, the Propeller Club’s Port of Boston, Boston Port and Seamen’s Aid Society, Massachusetts Bay Harbor Safety Committee, and Navy League’s Mass Bay Council.
In addition to her industry work, Lauren teaches courses on maritime law and policy topics as an adjunct professor at Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Roger Williams University School of Law, and Endicott College’s Gerrish School of Business.
A native of Michigan, Lauren holds a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (50 GRT Great Lakes and Inland) and is licensed to practice law in Massachusetts, Michigan, and the District of Columbia. She earned a joint degree of a J.D. from Roger Williams University School of Law and a Master of Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island, and a dual B.A. in International Political Science and International Studies from Hope College. Lauren now lives on the South Coast of Massachusetts with her husband and three children.
